A number of current issues relating to hand treatments have led to the development of a new ‘Touch Free Dispenser’ from VWR International, to control cross contamination and waste in the cleanroom, laboratory and support areas. The patented design is activated by an electronic eye which will dispense a pre-determined amount of soap, sanitizer or lotion when the light source is interrupted by a hand or wiper.

The dispenser was designed to encourage personnel in cleanrooms and controlled environments to adhere to strict hand and glove cleansing protocols. As the unit can be set to dispense a set amount of soap it effectively cuts back on waste and allows more accurate stocking levels of soap products.

Fitted with a 500ml cartridge of the chosen hand treatment, the unit is powered by four standard batteries which will run for up to 100,000 cycles. Products available for use with the dispenser include NovaClenz instant hand sanitiser, BioClenz CHG hand soap, Hy-G-Clenz anti-bacterial soap, LoNa Soap for a low sodium hand and glove cleanser, NovaDerm barrier protectant and NovaDyne general purpose soap.

Many cleanrooms, especially pharmaceutical R&D and biotechnology sites are sensitive to cross contamination of personnel and equipment. The dispenser does not pose the same contamination threat as hand operated soap pumps and squeeze bottles.

Personnel who have to wear gloves for an entire shift may have concerns about skin irritation and other dermatological problems. By using a product such as the NovaClenz prior to gloving they limit the number of germs on the skin that are likely to react with perspiration which may lead to rashes or similar irritations.

Some medical device assembly processes may not call for the operator to wear gloves. In these instances it is even more important that hand cleansing is maintained. A dispenser with NovaClenz instant hand sanitizer at each workstation simplifies cleansing and ensures that protocols are met.

In non-sterile hi-tech applications such as semiconductor/wafer fabs/disk drives, operators may have the need to cleanse gloved hands between processes. The LoNa soap tests out at less than 10 ppb for chloride and sodium, elements which can be of concern when operating in these environments. The lack of cross contamination would also be a plus factor.
