ICP - Standards
With the latest technological advances in
analytical inorganic instrumentation, the need for high quality
calibration standards of the highest purity has increased. BDH
supplies a comprehensive range of analytical standards for
inorganic analysis which satisfy these stringent demands.
The range includes ICP single element standards,
ICP multi-element standards and Quality Control standards.
The highest grade starting materials available
(typically 99.999% purity), 18 megohm water and high purity acids
are used to prepare every standard.
Class A volumetric glassware is used exclusively
and our analytical balances are calibrated routinely according to
NIST protocols. The standards are packaged in bottles that have
been acid bleached and rinsed with copious amounts of 18 megohm
water to insure the integrity of our final product.
Standard concentrations for the single elements
are usually determined by wet chemical analysis (gravimetric/titrimetric)
as well as verified instrumentally against the appropriate NIST
Standard Reference Material. The accuracy of the actual lot
analysis is +/- 0.5% of the stated value on the label. A
Certificate of Analysis is provided for each ICP standard stating
the actual concentration of the final solution, the traceability
to NIST, the expiration date and the trace impurities detected.
ICP-MS Standards
With increasing emphasis placed on accuracy,
repeatability and detection of low level analytes; the technique
of ICP-MS has migrated from research to everyday analysis. The
standards are produced purified acids and 18 megohm water, packed
in Teflon bottles to protect and guarantee the integrity of your
standard.
You can choose from over 50 standards; 10,000ppm,
1,000ppm concentrations, 100ml, 500ml pack sizes; tuning,
calibration, memory and interference check solutions; single and
multi-element standards. Each is traceable to NIST where possible
and has a free Certificate of Analysis and free delivery,
representing true value for money.
Listening to your comments we have built in
features to help you save time and money. Each single component
standard has its cap labelled preventing caps being accidentally
swapped and contamination occurring, when making up your
multi-element standards. Each label states the product catalogue
number for easier re-ordering, expiry date and convenient space to
write in date opened and date received for GLP.
For sample preparation reagents Merck Ultrapur and
BDH ARISTAR reagents are ideal.

When dealing with low levels of analytes the use
of CRMs can prove invaluable to a laboratory. CRMs can be pure
substances or matrix materials that can be used at different
stages of the analytical cycle for sample preparation to final
instrumental analysis. Using CRMs can control day to day quality,
verify the correct application of the chosen method and calibrate
the measurement process being used. New methods can also be
validated as they are developed.
Adoption of the use of CRMs can reduce your costs
through a reduction in repeat analysis. You will have increased
confidence and your customers increased satisfaction, in your
results. Potentially enhancing your reputation with third party
regulatory bodies and customers.

Analytical procedures frequently involve a number
of complex steps. Very rarely can a sample be analysed directly.
The pre-treatment or sample preparation steps are crucial to the
analytical procedure, but are often overlooked in Trace Analysis.
The aims of sample preparation are to remove any
interfering components in the sample, and to selectively enrich
the analyte concentration to aid detection.
Merck Eurolab supplies a selection of high quality
reagents and apparatus to aid in the sample preparation step. Full
details of all products can be obtained from the Merck Eurolab
on-line catalogue.

Block
Heaters
Grant Instruments have just launched the
Prima range of block heaters.
These high quality heaters ensure your
samples are at an accurately controlled temperature, and
remain contamination free - ideal for applications where a
water bath is not suitable.
There are two series, the UBD and the UBR,
which have temperature ranges of ambient + 5ฐC to 130ฐC.
Both have models that hold one, two or four blocks. They
are a standard size enabling existing Grant blocks to be
used in them.

Solid
Phase Extraction (SPE)
Solid Phase Extraction is used to
selectively extract components of interest from a complex
sample or much larger solvent volume prior to analysis by
HPLC, GC or TLC. Batch-to-batch consistency, fines
blocking the frit and contamination from the SPE tube have
major problems for this technique. Merck Eurolab has
addressed all three problems with LiChrolut, a high
quality range of SPE cartridges, loose sorbents and
accessories.

Pesticide
Residue Analysis
Analysis of pesticide residues in both
food stuffs and water is of increasing importance as more
is learnt about the food chain and the cumulative toxicity
of pesticides to humans.
Analysis usually consists of extraction
and clean-up followed by quantitative or qualitative
analysis. When analysing for pesticide large volumes of
reagent are used to extract the residues from the sample
which are then concentrated down to reach levels which are
instrumentally detectable. It is critical to ensure that
these reagents have lower residue levels than those being
detected in the sample. Suprasolv solvents have guaranteed
low levels for water and no-volatile matter content. They
are also examined by Gas Chromatography using ECD and PND,
ensuring that the solvents conform to the specified low
backgrounds.
Full details can be obtained from the
Merck Eurolab on-line catalogue.

Merck Eurolab supplies a comprehensive range
of high quality consumables for XRF from Chemplex.
A brief summary of products is detailed
below:
|
|
|
Thin Film Sample Supports
Thin film sample supports are used for
retaining liquid, powdered, slurry or solid specimens in XRF
sample cups for wavelength (WDXRF) and energy dispersive (EDXRF)
spectrochemical analysis. The thin film support retains the
specimen during the preparation and analysis stages, allow
the maximum analyte-line transmittance and provide
reproducible data.
|
|
|
Thin Film
Thin film, with a gas permeable membrane,
has unique submicron-size passageways extending from one
surface to the other. This permits gases and vapours to
permeate and prohibits the penetration of sample particles.
Intended to establish and maintain pressure equalisation
within an XRF sample cup and instrument sample chamber.
Available as a continuous roll or pre-cut circles. The thin
film should be tested to determine its degradation
resistance and its suitability for your sample. Properties
to consider are chemical attack, irradiation, thermal
softening, brittleness, preferred orientation, tearing and
stretching. Always use a blank to minimise errors induced by
trace contaminants contained within the film.

Sample
Cups
Merck Eurolab offers a wide range of sample
cups:
Trimless: Eliminates the
need to trim extraneous thin film and speeds up sample
preparation procedure; available in two types with the
choice of diameter.
Resealable vent: Unique
'bead to-indent' geometry for taut film and leak resistant
seals. Can be converted from a sealed into a vented cell.
Single open-ended: Flexible
in use and applications, unique 'bead to-indent' geometry
for taut film and leak resistant seals, with venting and
micro sample mounting provision. The single open ended cups
have an overflow reservoir for saving thermally sensitive
sample solutions and venting is easily achieved via
Snap-post.
Double open-ended: Unique
'bead to-indent' geometry for taut film and leak resistant
seals, venting is achieved via microporous film or vented
sample caps. These cups are suitable for high throughput of
samples in air or Helium paths.

Pellet
Cups
Pellet Cups are available in Aluminium and
Plastic, a taper provides for sample expansion at gradient
levels and rates - minimising displacement and segregation.
|
|
|
Fluxes
When analysing a material such as cement or
other silica material it is common to convert the sample
into a solid solution by fusion with a borate to produce a
smooth and homogeneous glass. Merck Eurolab offers lithium
and sodium borates in the Spectromeltฎ range to suit all
your requirements for XRF:
|
|
Low loss on ignition
|
|
|
High density
|
|
|
Low level contaminants
|
For finely powdered samples pressing of
tables is an alternative to fluxing. In most cases a stable
tablet cannot be prepared without an additive. In all these
cases the use of Hoechst Wax C Micro Powder is recommended.
